Runway Incursion Monitoring and Collision Avoidance System
Warning pilots and air traffic controllers before incursions take place
Challenges/Solution
Runways are places where very fast-moving vehicles must share the same space as very slow-moving vehicles. Keeping the two separated is crucial, and failure to do so has resulted in the worst aviation accidents in history. Air traffic regulators around the world continue to rank runway incursions as one of the most significant risks to aviation safety. However, traditional methods of airport surface detection are prone to false targets, leading to false alarms.
Runway Incursion Monitoring and Collision Avoidance System
The solution to the threat of runway incursion is a localized surveillance system at the points where incursions can take place. The Searidge Runway Incursion Monitoring and Collision Avoidance System (RIMCAS) is a localized system based on intelligent video that is reliable, accurate, and scalable. High camera frame rates allow for rapid calculation of precise location and velocity such that incursions can be detected, or even predicted, in real-time, and alerts can be generated before or milliseconds after an incursion has taken place.
Direct-to-cockpit and vehicle operator alerting can be achieved by integrating the real-time surveillance data, based on runway occupancy, with new or existing airfield lighting fixtures that can flash when an incursion is imminent or has taken place. Additionally, the same situational data can be shown on a display in the ATC tower simultaneously, such that pilots and ATCOs share the same awareness of the incursion alarm in real-time.
